Wierd Lancaster

Some odd and unusual trivia of my Hometown of Lancaster.



The capital?
Lancaster was capital of the young United States for one day, September 27, 1777 . The Continental Congress, while fleeing British militia during war of American Revolution, set up camp here. The previous capital was Philadelphia.

So where is this road?
Some of the village names in Lancaster County include: “Intercourse“, ” Bird-in-hand,” the and “Paradise“….. all on the same road (old Philadelphia pike). Other names include “Blue Ball“, “the Gap“, and “the Buck”

Dutch wooden shoes?
Pennsylvania Dutch is a derivative of Pennsylvania Deitsche… Deutsch or German was the language many settlers spoke who came to Central and Eastern Pennsylvania. Some of those groups are Mennonites, Amish, Hessians and Moravian s, as well as many others. “Deitsch “is believed to be stem from an early high German word for “Deutsch”

Presidential?
James Buchanan, the 15th president of the U S., Final home and resting place is in Lancaster,Pa… U S news and World Report recently listed him as the worst president in United Stated history…pending…

Kisses?
Milton Hershey’s first successful candy business was the Lancaster Caramel Company. hershey would sell the company to concentrate on Hershey Chocolate company centered in Derry township Pa.

Transportation, Lancaster style.
The Conestoga Wagon is believed to be first constructed in Lancaster County in the early 1700s. The name is believed to be taken from Conestoga valley or the Conestoga River, which winds through Lancaster. The word Conestoga is a Native American.

Red Roses?
The Red Rose city, Lancaster’s nick name, was borrowed from The royal house of Lancaster, England seal. lancaster County prisons facade is modeled on the Castle of Lancashire, in Britain.

Corpses?
In near by historic Lititz is the Corpse house. A house were early Moravian settlers kept there dead, at a nice cool temperature.

Cannon ball Charlie?
Lancaster Cities previous mayor and respected community leader, not only runs a successful apothecary chain, He has one of the largest private collections of cannons in the east coast.

Aaa chew!
Central Pennsylvania has a large amount of different disiguos trees and grasses. It also has one of the worst ratings for hay fever in North America.

A night at the opera..
One of the oldest, opera houses… still running in North America… is the Fulton Opera House. it is a integral part of downtown life.

The Amish of Lancaster do not pose for pictures. So you wont find any pictures of Amish posing for me on this site :)

the proper pronunciation of Lancaster is LANG-kist-er.
